Receiving Power and Listening Sensitivity in Tai Chi Power Release(太極發勁之接勁與聽勁)

Receiving Power and Listening Sensitivity in Tai Chi Power Release(太極發勁之接勁與聽勁

1. Receiving Power(接勁)

When both partners simultaneously release power through a double-hand push(雙按法), their forces counterbalance at the points of contact. This tests the integrity of their body structure and the stability of their centre of gravity. Through this mutual resistance, each partner senses the other’s central equilibrium(中定)and the strength of their power.

2. Listening Sensitivity(聽勁)

After several rounds of steady practice in receiving power, Partner A suddenly “empties” the contact(空掉)or yields backward(向後退讓). Partner B’s response reveals an essential difference in how their power is produced and controlled.

Response One: Lurching Forward(向前衝出)

This indicates that Partner B has used excessive upper-body effort when releasing power and relied too heavily on the opponent’s resistance to maintain balance. Once that support suddenly disappears, their own momentum and stiff force(僵勁)carry them forward and off balance.

Response Two: Sensitive Listening and Adaptation(聽勁敏銳)

Power comes from the lower body(下盤)and the waist acting as the axis(腰軸), rather than from forceful pushing with the upper body. With keen listening sensitivity, Partner B detects Partner A’s retreat and the loss of resistance at the contact points. Their nervous system and coordinated body movement respond within a fraction of a second: withdrawing the issued power(收勁), sinking the qi(沉氣), and returning to their own central equilibrium(中定). This demonstrates responsive listening sensitivity.

Do not rush to develop speed or strength(切忌求快求強). Pursuing either too early can easily lead back to habitual muscular force and stiffness.

Adhere closely to the principles of body alignment and movement(身法): “Gently hollow the chest and broaden the back(含胸拔背), relax the waist and settle the kua(鬆腰落胯), and sink the qi to the dantian(氣沉丹田).” Every action of releasing and receiving power must preserve central equilibrium(不失中定)and maintain the entire body as one integrated whole(全身完整一氣).[太極發勁之接勁與聽勁]
