The Subtle Art of Inner and Outer Connection(內外承接法的妙用)

The Subtle Art of Inner and Outer Connection(內外承接法的妙用)

The subtlety of inner and outer connectio lies in the light, agile coordination of nine joints—the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, back, waist, hips, knees, and ankles. Each responds to and supports the next, allowing movement to flow seamlessly through the whole body, like a thread passing through the nine bends of a winding pearl(九曲珠).

In application, the right hand takes the lead, drawing and plucking(牽採)the opponent’s right elbow to shift their centre of gravity. The left hand assists, adhering(黏)to their shoulder, back, or hip as the movement unfolds. One hand draws while the other adheres; one moves while the other remains still. Emptiness and fullness(虛實)complement each other between the hands, creating a coordinated pair of forces (force couple)through the mutual support of yin and yang(陰陽相濟). The opponent’s hard force is dissolved imperceptibly, expressing the principles of “overcoming hardness with softness”(以柔克剛)and “leading the incoming force into emptiness”(引進落空).

Left and right exchange roles, each hand alternating between leading and supporting. The movements cycle continuously, each giving rise to the next, sustaining an unbroken flow of opportunity and momentum.
