The Inner and Outer Connection Methods
The Inner and Outer Connection Methods
The Inner and Outer Connection Methods are techniques for engaging the opponent's center of gravity. Through the complementary relationship of yin and yang between the two arms, a phenomenon of body integration occurs. As long as one can master the timing of the engagement, it becomes easy to unbalance the opponent and make them fall, while also providing a stretching effect.
The nine major joints of the body (shoulders, elbows, wrists, etc.) must possess looseness and softness to effectively apply the Inner and Outer Connection Methods. Training for the looseness and softness of these nine major joints should begin with the fundamental movements from the "Ten Essentials of Tai Chi," such as sinking the shoulders, dropping the elbows, and expanding the chest.
Particularly, the joints of the arms—shoulders, elbows, and wrists—are crucial for adhering to the upper arm of the opponent (above the elbow joint). One must have a light and sensitive tactile awareness to follow the opponent's center of gravity without any intervention of strong or clumsy force, thereby unintentionally leading the opponent into a state of imbalance.
