The Essence of No-Arm in Tai Chi Chuan
The Essence of No-Arm in Tai Chi Chuan
Master Cheng Man-Ch’ing's training methods include "Beauty Hand" and "Tai Chi Non-Action." Beauty Hand is a training technique where the arms remain relaxed yet engaged; Master Song Zhi-Jian refers to it as the "Relaxed Holding Method." In this practice, the muscles, bones, and ligaments of the arms are relaxed, but there is no visible slackness.
"Tai Chi Non-Action" refers to the technique of avoiding the generation of excessive force with the arms. In this state, the arms do not take initiative and instead maintain a state of calmness and receptiveness, ready to adapt to various movements and techniques.
The non-initiating hand must rely on gravitational force, the strength of the waist and legs, reactive forces, and inertial energy to propel the body, thereby generating the movements of the forms and the techniques of push hands.
