太極拳架與推手體用相連,不可分離,拳架是基礎功夫,推手是應用。鬆柔推手強調順勢而為,我們稱之為「走化」,「走化」需要有「謙讓」的心理素質,表現在拳架與推手的技藝上如:「沉肩墜肘」、「涵胸拔背」、「鬆腰落胯」 、「虛實分清」、「用意不用力」⋯。初學者的習慣動作是向前按出,這個動作會產生拙力,暴露出向前的企圖心與傾向。對手只要能夠「走化」,就可以應用「牽動」的技巧,展現「牽動四兩撥千斤」的柔克技藝。

初學者經過反覆失衡的經驗後,身手會自然調整,慢慢修正成「由腿而腰形於手指」,手臂的拙力自然會退出,身手自然輕靈,讓對手無機可乘,無勢可借。

Supple Push Hands

The Tai Chi frame and push hands are interconnected and cannot be separated. The frame is the fundamental skill, while push hands is its application. Soft and flexible push hands emphasize going with the flow, which we call "flowing transformation/ neutralization." This requires a mindset of humility and yielding, reflected in the skills of the frame and push hands, such as "sinking the shoulders and dropping the elbows," "containing the chest and rounding the back," "relaxing the waist and sinking the hips," "clearly distinguishing between emptiness and solidity," and "using intention/ the mind rather than force."

Beginners often develop the habit of pushing forward, which leads to the use of clumsy force and reveals their intent and inclination to move forward. As long as the practitioners can apply "flowing transformation/ neutralization," they can utilize the technique of "pulling" to demonstrate the skill of "using four ounces to deflect a thousand pounds."

After repeatedly experiencing imbalance, beginners will naturally adjust their movements, slowly correcting to "from the legs and waist to the fingertips." The clumsy force in the arms will naturally withdraw, resulting in light and agile movements that leave the opponent with no openings or leverage to exploit.
