Revised Push Hands Competition Rules
Revised Push Hands Competition Rules
The revision of the Push Hands competition rules, supported by President Yeh Wen-Kuan of the Federation, along with coaches and athletes from various training centers, has been thoroughly promoted and tested over the past year. On March 3, 2024, during the Zhijian Cup National Tai Chi Championships, we successfully verified the feasibility of these revised rules. It was heartening to see the enthusiastic participation of competitors across all generations—elders, adults, and youth.
Before the competition, participants engaged in friendly exchanges, sharing insights and experiences in a positive atmosphere. Afterward, athletes and coaches provided valuable feedback, which greatly boosted the confidence and motivation of the event organizers.
One of the key achievements of the revised rules is the restoration of the long-lost techniques of Peng (ward-off), Lü (rollback), and An (press). At the start of the matches, there was no immediate rush to attack, reflecting the new approach.
The concept behind the revised rules is similar to that of tennis, badminton, volleyball, and table tennis, where the idea of serving and returning the ball applies. In Push Hands, the initiating player starts offensively, while the defending player adopts a passive stance, leading to an ongoing exchange of offensive and defensive strategies.
